Usage Notes
- Headings tell users and search engines what your content is about.
- Heading One is your largest heading and most important heading. Use Heading One as your first heading for the page. Typically you only want to use Heading One once per page or section.
- Headings Two through Six are subheadings. They help break up your page for easier reading, establish a visual logic for your content, and style your page.
- Use keywords in your headings to improve your search engine optimization.
Heading One
How to: Type the #
followed by a space, and then type your heading.
Example: # Heading One
- Your Heading One typically is at the top of the page in your first or second block. Use it to tell your reader (and search engines) what the page is about.
- Don’t get carried away and use your H1 too many times on a page.
Heading Two
How to: Type #
two times, a space, and then your heading.
Example: ## Heading Two
- We use Heading Two the most because it breaks a page up into major sections.
Heading Three
- Heading Three breaks major sections up into sub sections.
Heading Four
Heading Five
Heading Six
- Headings Four, Five, and Six can be used to break sub sections up into even smaller logical groupings, but they are rarely used in this manner because most web pages don’t drill down that deep. Consider linking to another page instead.
- Headings Four, Five, and Six are frequently used for design because they provide strong visual contrast with Headings One, Two, and Three.
